XCR13 Rd 8 -10/08/2013 Cross Country, Lardner Park

What an introduction to AV running!

I may have chosen the shortest distance of 4km to make my AV running debut. But the hills, ditches and mud definitely made up for the other runs I have missed this season! Well that is what I am telling myself after a totally new experience to me- that is Cross Country running.

As soon as I said I was thinking of running Lardner, everyone shared with me their memories and running tips of this event:

“Don’t go too hard too early!”

“Wear gumboots”

“Ooh the Hills!”

“It is one of the hardest runs of the season”

“It sorts out the sheep out from the goats”

With all this on board I was still as eager as ever to run this race and put all the advice to good use, even more so after walking the course with Morgan.

Two o’clock start came round quick enough and the start being on a hill was the first of many challenges.

I tried hard not to get swept up with the main crowd and set my mind at running my own race. I quickly came across the next challenge around the 2km mark, where hurdling a fence and managing to stay upright with the mud underfoot proved for some light entertainment as some of us did this easier than others and some did it flair.

There was a strong head wind across the top of the course that proved to be an extra obstacle. Here I remembered to work my arms to keep my legs ticking over. At the top of this hill Giddo was armed and waiting to capture every Harriers’ moment on a Canon. Thankfully it was all downhill to the finish line for us girls. The guys on the other hand, had to do it all over again taking their total distance to 8km.

I must add a big thank you to the volunteer marshal’s and the rest of the Harriers for all their cheers and words of encouragement at nearly every turn. They were amazing! I look forward to my next AV running event.
