XCR13 Rd 1- 27/04/2013 Cross Country Road Relay, Jells Park, Wheelers Hill

A gloriously sunny day, a picturesque, undulating grassy bushland park, gusting winds and crowds of eager athletes from across Victoria set the scene for round  one of the Athletics Victoria Winter Racing Season – Jells Park cross country relay event.

This cross country running course consisted of two laps of a crazily zigzagging course of 3km (6km for adult divisions). Interesting, but exhausting on the second lap – due in part to the strong winds and sloping terrain.

Amongst the various racing divisions this event attracted a record of 300+ teams amongst which the Traralgon Harriers featured in five:

Men’s Division 3, Men’s Division 5, Men’s Division 7, Women’s Division 2 and Women’s Division 4.

Women’s Division 4 included three athletes amongst whom the standout performance was junior Harrier Molly Irvine’s 31:22, Michelle Sawyer ran 31:11 and Jen Van Der Veldon finished her first AV run ever in 37:20. This team finished 10th out of 15 teams.

Women’s Division 2 finished 7th out of 13 teams with strong running from all four members with the always reliably strong Kylie Murray leading the way in 23:09, Liz Kenny 26:50, Anna Orr 28:15 and Nicole Hauxwell 27:52 completed a very sound team.

Men’s Division 7 consisted of Ian Twite 27:37, Brad Harkin 25:41, Travis McInnes 29:00 and Michael Gidden 32:37. They ended up 10th out of 16 teams with possibly the most admirable being Ian Twite’s injury bound and sleep deprived contribution.
