14/8/2014-Breed St -5km

It was a challenging course but this did not deter a Harriers regular to run a personal best. The run comprised a number of sharp rises, starting at the Agnes Brereton netball courts then following along Bradman Boulevard, St Georges Road and returning to Agnes Brereton.

It was an impressive effort by Mandy Ellis to get a personal best over 5 km in 29.16. Mandy has been clocking up the kilometres in the last few months as well as participating in Traralgon Harriers running coaching sessions instructed by Todd Houghton. The refining of her running technique in the coaching sessions has really improved her style and pace.

The first female on handicap this week was Megan Ferguson in 25.51 followed by Emma Marino in 27.58 and Karen Graham in 21.02. The male runners led by Pete Sanders in 20.12, Jason Irvine in 25.20 and Michael Abbott third in a time of 21.29.

The first three men on non-handicap time were Robbie Preston, Darrel Cross and Pete Sanders came home with times of 19.30, 19.31 and 20.12, respectively. Fastest ladies home were Karen Graham in 21.02, Liz Kenney in 23.38 and Tania Whitehead in 24.06.

Last week we welcomed back Andrew Legge, after a break of about two years and it’s nice to see him back running in good form.

Next week’s 5 km run is from Christopher Court, Traralgon at 5.50 pm. There will also be a 3 km and 1 km run, so if you are just starting out come and have a go at the short course. Traralgon Harriers welcomes runners of all abilities, for details about club activities see our website www.traralgonharriers.org.au.

31/7/2014-Rangeview Drive 5km

One of the best things about the Harrier’s is that can always find a like minded runner, demonstrated by the small, but dedicated group at this weeks run. Despite the formidable winds that kept most of us inside, a small group of 16 runners joined together for the Rangeview drive 5km run.

The three fastest runners on handicap were Glenn Graham (20:54), Zoe Bormanis (27:58) and Kev Piercy (21:07), all putting in a terrific effort given the difficult conditions.

Although a small group this week, the Harrier’s hold their weekly Thursday runs in rain, hail, shine or gale force winds, and welcome any new runners of all abilities and levels of experience.

17/7/2014- Gilmore Giddy 5km

Thursday night’s 5km race this week began near the clubrooms on Douglas Parade with a 3 lap course. It was obvious that the winter season is well upon us with runners covering up every inch of exposed skin, and some who looked like they expected a blizzard. Skies remained dry however and after a quick warm up the conditions were admirably met.

This week we welcomed two new runners; Kade King (23:59) and Megan Ferguson (27:14) whose terrific first runs put them in first and second place in terms of handicap. Emma Standen (29:08) took third place with an amazing run and already knocking 4minutes off her first 5km run with the Harrier’s only four weeks ago. Terrific work!

Megan Harper was the only junior runner on the night and completed the 2 lap course in an impressive 21:30. Well done Megan.

The fastest females this week were the talented Kylie Murray (19:48), followed by the closely placed Karen Graham (21:17) and Molly Irvine (21:36) with their usual strong performances. This weeks fastest male runners were Darren Fletcher (19:30), Darrel Cross (19:32) and Charlie Twomey (20:00).

Well done to all the runners on the night for putting in a great run. The Harrier’s always welcomes new runners of all ages, levels and experience to their weekly runs and social events. The Melbourne Marathon Training Series is due to start up on Sundays in August and all members of the public are invited to participate in the supportive distance runs. See the website for more details: www.traralgonharriers.org.au.

3/7/2014- Meadow Park Drive 6km

This weeks 6km Championship run was held on the west side of Traralgon with a 2 lap circuit of the Wirilda Crescent block. The Harriers have two championship seasons; a winter and a summer series. The points are allocated based on handicap and reward runners who put in a consistent performance across the season.

The clear skies on Thursday meant a drop on the thermostat but that didn’t slow the pace off the starting line as 41 runners took part in the race. The group were joined by two new runners this week; Craig Robert and Michael Glaubitz. We hope that they will continue to join in the regular events and enjoy the benefits of running with the group and be motivated to keep training.

The fastest three runners on handicap this week were Craig Robert (24:19), Michael Glaubitz (29:41) and Mark Peek who had a terrific time taking several minutes off his usual 6km pace (31:43).

The female runners this week were led by Molly Irvine (24:14), Karen Graham (25:23) and Hilary Meyer (26:12) continuing their usual fast pace. The fastest male runners contained three familiar faces also: Ian Cornthwaite (22:22), Robbie Preston (23:44) and Kev Piercy (24:07).

The Harriers hope to encourage all members of the public to come and participate in their events and to motivate an active lifestyle in the community. New members are always welcome. Please see the website for details on the regular events: www.traralgonharriers.org.au.

26/6/2014 The Avenue -6km

With Sanctuary Lake as the pivotal point, last Thursday’s 6km race traced a 3-lap course beginning just off The Avenue in a park on the lake’s shores. As mid-winter approaches participant numbers have eased in proportion to increasing cold and short day-lengths. Also having an effect would be the host of road and cross-country races available this time of year, meaning that some of the Harriers’ regulars are either in preparatory or recovery pre-race mode.

Off the first ten finishers in Thursday’s handicap event, six were female; whilst the first three place-getters, earning 100, 96 and 93 race points respectively, were: Melanie Riddle 29:27, Kelly Johnstone 33:55 and Brendan Linke 35:10.

The three fastest outright runners amongst the males were: Ian Cornthwaite 22:12, Darren Fletcher 23:19 and Darrel Cross 24:04 and the three quickest females were: Karen Graham 25:18, Molly Irvine 26:17 and Hillary Meyer 27:16.

An exciting though challenging development for Molly Irvine has been her recent selection to represent Victoria in a team of six at the National All Schools Cross Country Championships in Albany, WA in August this year. Molly, who is only seventeen, will be competing in the 18/19 year age group against athletes from every Australian state and territory. Adding to the challenges confronting Molly will be the juggling of training with her year twelve studies at Lavalla College and her part-time job.

This Thursday’s (July 3rd) run is the Meadow Park Drive 6km from opposite Grubb Avenue and just across from the clubrooms in Douglas Parade, Traralgon.

As per usual starting time is 5:15 for slower runners/walkers and 6pm for others.

The Harriers urge the public to join in, regardless off their ability.

19/6/2014 – Riverslea Boulevard 5km

In the wake of the wonderful success of the Traralgon Marathon and Running Festival, last Thursday’s Gilmour Giddy 5km attracted a moderate field of participants. Many of them braved not only the brisk Winter temperature but also the after-effects of competing in the Festival: Sore muscles, tiredness and the prospect of slower times.

The first three runners home in the handicap event were: Brendan Caffry 25:13, Kelly Johnson 28:34 and Tanya Rong 28:41.

Brendan was knew to the Harriers’ Thursday competition and displayed talent, whilst Kelly and Tanya showed remarkable recovery from their participation in the Running Festival; Kelly in the 10km and Tanya in the half-marathon.

The fastest runners outright were: Karen Graham 20:33, Tania Whitehead 23:47 and Emma Marino 27:14 amongst the females and for the males, Darren Fletcher 18:30 then Ian Cornthwaite and Darrel Cross both 19:47.

All of these quickest runners competed in the Festival just four days prior, and four of them in the half-marathon. Karen Graham, second outright in the half marathon and first in the 40 to 49 age group, and Darren Fletcher, also in the 40 to 49 age group, both show-cased the great recoveries than can stem from diligent training programs

In addition to Brendan Caffry, the other new runners on Thursday were Emma Standen and Cindy Beedall.

The Harriers are very keen to involve new runners and walkers in their events to spread the physical, social and psychological benefits of active lifestyles.

This week’s Thursday (June 26th) run is the 6km “The Avenue” event around Sanctuary Lake. The Avenue comes off Morgan Drive in Traralgon’s north-east.

Starting times are 5:45 for slowies and 6:00 for the more rushed.

12/6/2014- Gilmour Giddy 5km

It was a cool, crisp night with most runners taking it easy, making it their last run before the Traralgon Marathon festival. The run was a three lap circuit starting on Douglas Parade, taking in Grubb Avenue, Cross’s Road and Gilmour Street.

The festival has enticed new runners to Harriers in recent weeks which has paid off for newcomers Emma and Giuseppe Marino both making it into the top three on handicap for their respective sections. Additional training for the festival has also been paying off for Tanya Rong who posted another good time plus second female on handicap.

The first female on handicap this week was Emma Marino in 30.03 followed by Tanya Rong in 31.48 and Lynda Jones in 32.26. The male runners led by JP Meyer in 32.10, Giuseppe Marino in 32.43 and Pete Sanders third in a time of 32.46.

The first three men on non-handicap time were Charlie Twomey, Biasi Silvestro and Pete Sanders came home with times of 20.39, 20.43 and 20.46, respectively. Fastest ladies home were Hillary Meyer in 21.29, Karen Graham in 21.52 and Molly Irvine in 22.29.

6/6/2014 -Tennis Courts 5km

Local playwright and director Phil Mayer won the Harriers’ 5km Thursday handicap last week, whilst local student Tom Irvine finished second followed, in third place, by Mark Peek.

The Harriers also welcomed one newcomer to the Thursday run – Kelly Johnstone.

The course traced a two lap loop over near-flat terrain from opposite the Traralgon Tennis Courts in Franklin Street.

Once again participation was strong, including over fifty entrants. The downside however was that a timer blip meant all the finishing times were deleted, so this times-deficient report is restricted to finishing places and the upcoming Traralgon Marathon and Running Festival (Sunday 15th June).

For a group of Harriers this 5km race was possibly the last high intensity run leading up to the Sunday’s Festival which includes the options of a full marathon (42.2km), a half-marathon (21.1km) or a 10km event.

A selection of local entrants in the full marathon include Ryan Wissmer, Ian Twite, Mark Rossiter, Jennifer Northe and Andrew Legge.

Thirty two year old Ryan Wissmer is an exciting prospect for marathon domination this year. Ryan has spent the last three years perfecting his running biomechanics and discovering his optimal training tolerances. He had been in serious training for the 2013 Traralgon Marathon till over-training and a flat-footed over-stride caused stress fractures in his feet. It then took nine months of rest and the incorporation of orthotics and a change of running technique from a heel strike to a fore-foot action for Ryan to begin serious training again.

Ryan’s average weekly training includes 120km, mostly of sustained threshold running on grass surfaces, now reducing to just 40km of easy running in this pre-marathon week. He is still adjusting to the orthotics, often contending with blisters, but still hopes for a marathon finishing time of 2hours 35minutes or quicker. Ryan is tentatively hopeful that without too much pressure of expectation this will be a successful race for him and one he can add to his host of other strong performances over alternative distances, including two 50km ultras.

For local identity Ian Twite, nearing his sixtieth birthday, Sunday’s Traralgon Marathon will be his tenth local event and 92nd race of the 42km marathon distance or longer. Ian, who has also reduced his weekly training commitment this year, running a relatively low 60 to 70km, has felt much improved and has been injury-free since changing his style to a forefoot strike, thereby reducing pronation and impact. In addition Ian has reduced his dietary sugar intake and felt the freedom of carrying 5kg less.

Jennifer Northe, an accomplished marathon runner at 44 years old, should feature well in the in the Traralgon edition and will also be a strong contender for the female over 40 category. Jenny has been running about 60 to 70km per week in training, has completed more than five marathons and is hoping her body will be co-operative in producing a time of under 3:23 on Sunday.

There is a rumour she will not be without local competition however, as it is reported that Traralgon Marathon legend and doyen in this unique form of masochism, Sandra Timmer-Arends will be running.

Mark Rossiter and Andrew Legge both have the determination and experience to put in strong performances as well. Andrew completed the Melbourne Ironman triathlon in March, and the training for this plus his average maximum weekly 70 to 80 kms of running in addition to the strength and knowledge gained from his six marathons completed in 2013 means he feels well prepared for Sunday’s Traralgon Marathon.

Andrew, who works for the Latrobe City, has also helped organize a running group called the Latrobe Team which includes 27 members who plan to participate in the Traralgon Running Festival 10km.

We had plenty of newcomers again this week, with only a couple of weeks until the Traralgon Marathon and Running Festival, runners are squeezing in their last few training sessions.

The Harriers 5 km run next Thursday will be a good training run due to it starting near the Tennis Centre and taking in a portion of the upcoming running event. If you are competing in the event come down this Thursday for a social run with many others that will also be participating on the day.

The run was a three lap circuit around St Gabriel’s P.S taking in Stirling Avenue, Wirilda Crescent and Parkwood Way. There were five newcomers Adrian Harper, Giuseppe Marino, Helen Reeves, Michael Hill and Chris Bannister with times of 20.46, 27.30, 37.53, 29.20 and 30.08, respectively. 22/5/2014- Breed Street 5km

Despite encroaching winter the Harriers are enjoying the maintained popularity of their Thursday evening run. With the reduced daylight of late Autumn and Winter the runs are now confined to areas where street lighting is adequate and traffic minimal. Brightly flashing LED bands worn by participants adds extra visibility and a disco-like theme.

Last week’s run was held over a slowish course from near the netball courts off the lower end of Breed Street, Traralgon and involved an out and back course incorporating two looping sections and many changes of direction.

The first three place-getters in the handicap were Kevin Piercy 20:10, Matt Buckland 20:24 and Emma Marino 28:38.

As always, veteran athlete Kev Piercy put in a remarkable effort, whilst young school teacher matt Buckland and recent Thursday run convert, Emma Marino both ran per km rates consistent with the previous week’s 6km run yet this week on a slower course and were thus solid performances.

Amongst the fastest finishers for the Breed Street 5km were Darrel Cross 18:55, Darren Fletcher 18:58, Ian Cornthwaite 19:00, Karen Fletcher 21:46, Molly Irvine 22:14 and Hillary Meyer 22:18.

Darrel Cross and Darren Fletcher have both improved in leaps and bounds in recent weeks and would have been quietly rejoicing to have now over-taken their traditional rivals Ian Cornthwaite and Des Paynter.

Karen Graham is also running exceptionally and stands out for her aggressively fast starts.

Whilst there were no new runners this week, it was pleasing to see Alessandra Biarbato, a language teacher from Italy, back for her second run with the Harriers and also to welcome Rachel Massaro back after a long break.

After the run a presentation evening and buffet dinner was held at the clubrooms to award the summer season place-getters. See Thursday’s Express for details.

This Thursday’s run is 5km beginning near the corner of Rangeview Drive and Sterling Avenue in Traralgon. Participants who expect to run/walk slower than 25min. per 5km pace are asked to start at 5:50pm whilst the quicker runners start at 6pm. The public is encouraged to join in.

1/5/2014 -Smiths Street Park Lane 5km

The runners lit up the night again this week with their safety night lights as they tackled the Park Lane, Morgan Drive and Strathcole Drive 5 km circuit. It was a great night for running with the conditions making it a night for fast times and personal bests.

Michelle Colwell again performed well, she did a personal best last week and backed it up to do another personal best this week in a time of 30.19. She is hoping to crack 30 minutes for 5 km in the run next week.

It was also encouraging to see some more young Venice Inot running 1 lap while Michael Walker, and Georgina Molinari both coming back from a break did 2 laps.

First female runner home on handicap was Madelon Lane in 30.39 followed by Zoe Bormanis, 31.14 and Michelle Colwell in 31.19, with the male runners led by Ian Heafield in 30.48, Bob Bickett in 31.14 and Terry Anders third in a time of 31.59.

Brendan Woodman, Ian Cornthwaite and Darrel Cross were fastest males home with times of 18.44, 18.45 and 19.33, respectively. Fastest ladies home were Kylie Murray in 19.31, Karen Graham in 21.09 and Molly Irvine in 21.35.

Next week’s 5km run is on Liddiard Road at 5.50 pm. Traralgon Harriers welcomes runners of all abilities, for details about club activities see our website www.traralgonharriers.org.au.

24/4/2014- Christopher Court 5km

A terrific turnout swelled the numbers at this week’s Christopher Court 5km circuit, one of the fastest of the winter championship runs. The flat route along the length of Swallow Grove, Kay Street with a small loop through the surrounding streets enables many runners to reach their best times.

The rain held off, and with the new arm bands given to all members for the winter series, the flashing red lights added a unifying brightness to the group, increasing the visibility of runners to other road users.

The group were delighted to welcome four new runners to the group; Angela Lawrence, Nicole Moon, Kim Ryan and Chris Peek; and also Tom Irvine who has had a long break from the Harriers. The group hope to encourage other social and elite runners, junior through to masters to participate in the club’s events.

The handicap race was very close this week, with the first three runners all within 4 seconds of each other; Chris Peek (24:35), Angela Lawrence just behind (24:36) and Nicole Moon (24:39).

This week Venice Inot took part in the kid’s race again, with a terrific run 6:52, well done! The fastest female runners this week were Kylie Murray (18:41), Karen Graham (20:38) and Molly Irvine (20:50). Fastest males across the line were also very close this week; Ian Cornthwaite (18:05), Des Paynter (18:09) and Brendan Woodman (18:21).

17/4/2014- Clubrooms- Stockdale Road 5km

After a cool drizzly day this Thursday’s run started at the clubrooms for the Stockdale road circuit; a sure way to warm up the legs and post a fast time. The figure 8 circuit had a few runners perplexed,

It was a welcoming site seeing a few old faces who haven’t been to the club for a while including Jason Mulvogue and Bree Morris, returning for a catch up and to show their continued progress. Bree assures the group her running has been erratic of late due to study commitments, but her result and her efforts on Tuesday night’s with Deb have showed no loss of speed over the summer.

The handicap race this week was led by Jason Mulvogue (22:56), Kerry Anders (25:04) and Ian Heafield (27:52). It was Kerry’s first run with the Harrier’s, and we hope to see her continued performances in the coming weeks; well done for a terrific first run!

Darren Fletcher  (18:35) clocked a great time, finishing fastest of the males and followed closely by Brendan Woodman (19:07) and Biasi Silvestro (19:19). Kylie Murray (19:06) was the fastest female this week with a terrific run and a substantial lead. In second place was the consistent performer Molly Irvine (20:46) and Jenny North (21:40) in third.

Next Thursday’s race is at Christopher Court 5km, and don’t forget the winter start time of 5:50pm for the first group, and 6:00pm for the faster group. Please remember to wear white or reflective clothing during the winter months. The Harrier’s is a social club that endeavours to cater to runners and walkers of all levels and ages, creating a welcoming atmosphere while encouraging health and fitness. For more information on the Thursday night and other frequent events please check out our new website: www.traralgonharriers.org.au.
